There has recently been a lot of attention in the media paid to the growing problem with opioid addiction in the nation.  We have seen thousands of deaths from accidental overdoses of narcotic painkillers, and the problem is only getting worse, with patients getting access to more and more powerful drugs.

perscription-drugs-2-1160103-m-300x225Recently, it has been reported that singer Prince died as result of an accidental overdose of Fentanyl.   Fentanyl is one of the most powerful opioid painkillers on the market and is typically used for patients with advanced stage cancer and things like bone pain.  This particular narcotic is far more potent and dangerous than heroin. More people are electing to undergo total knee replacement than ever before.  These patients are much younger than they had been in past, when total knee replacement surgery was typically reserved for elderly people with severe arthritis and those who suffered a traumatic knee injury.

knee-replacement---side-view-1183622-mAccording to a recent news feature form Blabbermouth, Glenn Hughes, who is the former base player and vocalist for the band, Deep Purple, has recently cancelled his upcoming U.S. tour which has been marketed at The Trek.  Hughes is unable to make The Trek because he says he suffered some “recent setbacks” following his double knee replacement surgery.  Continue reading

Getting a total knee replacement is a big decision.  There is often a lot of pain following the surgery and an arduous rehabilitation period that can keep a patient out of work for weeks while having to go through physical therapy. Unless the patient broke his or her knee in a traumatic accident or attack of some sort, it’s generally considered an elective procedure. But the question becomes weighing the difficulty of coping with chronic and worsening pain versus undergoing a risky surgical operation – and all the recovery problems that may accompany it.

shower-1427304Now, there may be good news for knee replacement patients. A recent news article from Pantagraph indicates patients may be able to hit the showers sooner. There has long existed a fear that showering any sooner than two weeks might increase the likelihood of a post-operative infection.

Granted, the study is small, but it indicates no differences in bacterial swabs from patients who waited two weeks to shower compared with those allowed to shower after about two days.

In the past two years we have seen various coverage in the media about listeria being found in multiple consumer food products, resulting in large scale recalls.  Listeria is a bacteria that is formally known as Listeria monocytogenes, and can result in serious gastrointestinal (GI) infection in humans.

sunflower-seeds-9-1465812Symptoms of Listeria infection include high fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, joint stiffness, nausea, and severe headaches.  While it is not fatal to the average adult in otherwise good health, it can be fatal to women who are pregnant, very old or very young patients, and those with a compromised immune system.   Last year alone, according to a recent news feature from CNN, there were an estimated 1,600 cases of Listeria, and of those cases, 260 people died.  Continue reading

A man from Florida has filed a new Xarelto injury lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson, which is the U.S. marketing partner of Xarelto) and Bayer A.G. which is the German pharmaceutical giant that manufactures the medication. As part of this lawsuit, he is claiming negligent manufacture of a defective drug, among several other related claims.

perscription-drug-case-1156714-mThe lawsuit was filed in a United States District Court and technically has several more named defendants than listed above because each of these other companies have several wholly owned subsidiaries that were involved in the manufacture and marketing of Xarelto according to a recent news article from the Louisiana Record. Atrial Fibrillation (Afib) is a serious medical condition that affects about one in ten Americans over the age of 65.  If someone suffers from atrial fibrillation, which is defined as an irregular heartbeat not associated with a heart valve defect, they will experience what doctors call “bouts” of the condition.

surgery1When a person has a bout of atrial fibrillation, the normal rhythm of the heart that pumps blood throughout the body will stop, and there will be a flutter in the heart that is not effective at pumping blood.  At this point, the patient will typically have symptoms such as a very fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, and dizziness.  While these symptoms can be uncomfortable and dangerous, the real reason people fear Afib is because it can quickly lead to a stroke when the brain is deprived of blood. According to a recent news article from Fox News, doctors are now able to perform a total hip replacement procedure as an outpatient surgery where the patient gets to leave the hospital on the same day.  The article follows the journey of a male patient who elected to undergo a this outpatient total hip replacement.

A recent article from Medpage Today looks at new uses being proposed for a class of medications know as new oral anticoagulants (NOACs).  This is a fairly new class of medications that includes Xarelto, Eliquis, Pradaxa, and Savaysa.  These medications were designed primary to treat patients who suffer from a serious medical condition know as atrial fibrillation (Afib).

perscription-drugs-2-1160103-m-300x225As you have probably heard actor Kevin Nealon tell you during a commercial break, Afib is medical condition classified as a irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve defect.  A patient with Afib is at risk for developing blood clots that can cause serious and often deadly problems.  They can block the flow of blood to the brain.  This deprives the brain of much needed oxygen and is what happens when a patient has a stroke. The loss of blood can cause death or serious brain injury that can have life long effects. Continue reading

Over the past decade, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has become a one of the most prescribed medications available, with hundreds of thousands undergoing the therapy each year. However, it should be noted that the vast majority of these patients are not taking the drug because they have the medical condition for which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug to treat.manstandingonwall

When hormone replacement therapy drugs came on the market in the 1970s, it was labeled for use with a medical condition know as hypogonadism.  These patients who suffered from hypogonadism had very low testosterone count and were typically diagnosed at a fairly young age. This is still the only medical condition that FDA approved the hormone therapy to treat. Continue reading
